At the beginning of 2011, Oiltanking Terneuzen BV signed a contract with Valuepark Terneuzen to expand the jetty in the Braakmanhaven. The expansion will take place in a north-easterly direction and the jetty capacity will be increased by 4 berths. The expansion will enable Oiltanking (OT) to receive more and larger ships (up to approx. 275 metres) for the supply/delivery of liquid products for the process industry.

Following a tense period of preparation and permit applications, the tendering procedure for this project began in September of this year. As part of the construction work on the jetty will take place in a Natura2000 area, the Province has imposed a so-called ‘herstelopgave’ (obligation to take restorative measures) on VT. In October, Valuepark Terneuzen signed a covenant with nature organisations, in connection with the creation of temporary nature. In this way, Valuepark Terneuzen met its obligations to take restorative measures.

The expansion will be executed in two phases, starting with the dredging work, followed by the construction of the jetty in March 2012. At the end of October, dredging company De Boer started to dredge the port. First on the job was the hopper suction dredger ‘Amazone’, which began to dredge the more deep-lying sections in particular. Then the bucket dredger ‘Zeearend’ was brought in. This will dredge the sections up to Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (NAP) level -15.00. For the shallower sections and the slopes, the crane pontoon ‘Obelix’ will be used. This can work to a depth of NAP level -6.00.

The area to be excavated has a surface area of 120,000 m2 and contains, in total, approx. 650,000 m3 of dredged material. The dredged material will be transported by means of the hopper suction dredger and using split barges, which will distribute it in disposal area W15_5 in the Western Scheldt.

For the purpose of constructing the jetty, the existing green harbour light on the western side of the port will also have to be relocated in a north-westerly direction. These operations will take place simultaneously with the dredging work.
